Until recently, for a supplier of durable medical equipment to be reimbursed through Medicare, they would have to have won the right to be a supplier by way of a bidding process. From December 2018 onwards, the supplier environment changed, with suppliers now being able to apply for the right. On successful application, inspection, and accreditation, the supplier is issued with a Provider Transaction Access Number (PTAN) which is used to bill for any DME products – without this, you will not be reimbursed.

No – the two areas are distinct. You are only accredited and can bill for products if you have a PTAN. It can be a more streamlined process to become accredited if you are a Medicare-enrolled physician or medical professional, but you will still need to make sure that it is completed.

DME stands for Durable Medical Equipment, which includes reusable medical equipment like wheelchairs and oxygen tanks. It is needed by individuals with medical conditions or disabilities for daily living and healthcare purposes.
